the day Ethan cried

So kids cry all the time. They cry when they fall down, and they cry when they don't get their way. They cry for attention and they cry when their favorite idol gets voted out.

Yes, Joakim Gomez was voted out today, and Ethan was so upset that he cried for a good five minutes. Never thought that Singapore Idol had such a strong facination and hold on my kids, but it does.

Ethan has been a JG fan from day one. I think it was his hair that facinated Ethan the most - you know, the spiky cool look that teenagers spot these days. Singing-wise, as we all know, JG is not the strongest. But despite all the criticisms JG received in the press and from the other members of the Ong family, Ethan always voted for JG. Week in, week out. It does not matter if the judges gave critical comments, or when we said voiced similar opinions. "Vote for talent, not for looks!" we say.

But who is to tell a 5-year old, going on to 6, that Joakim is not a good idol? For one, Joakim shows up every week giving his best. Yes, he may not be the strongest vocalist and every week, and he hears it from the judges every week. But let's not to forget this is a 17-year old kid. I think Singapore has to give him credit for gamesmanship. If not for anything else, let's give him credit for showing up. And for improving. This kid certainly has the drive, and he was certainly not the weakest singer this week.

I told Ethan some weeks ago that Joakim reminds me of "The Little Blue Engine that could". You may know of this classic story book for kids - about a small blue engine that believes in itself, and saves the day. Joakim is the modern day embodiment of the little blue engine that could, .... until today.

Joakim's parents should be proud of what their son has done, as I would as a parent should my sons one day decide to participate in any competition. But a highly publicized event such as Singapore Idol is a real toughie.

There's nothing to be ashamed of, Joakim. You made a dignified exit today. You make your parents proud.

There's nothing to be ashamed of, Ethan. You are a loyal fan. You make your parents proud.
